Hiking in New Hampshire:

Plan your next adventure now. This season, travel off the beaten path and visit the Great North Woods. Just make sure to practice safe social distancing on the trails.

Hiking is the perfect social distancing activity. The only thing that makes it better is adding the views from our North Country. With experiences for the whole family, our area is packed with hiking options to offer something for everyone. Hiking is one of the best ways to see the entire region.

Are you ready to take hiking to another level? Literally, take your hikes to new heights with the Go North 9er Hiking Challenge. Are you up for it? There’s only one way to find out. Lace-up those hiking boots and hit the trail!

With five peaks in New Hampshire and four in Vermont, those who experience it will get a great view of the area’s landscape and all it has to offer. Anyone who has the legs, lungs and heart to complete all nine peaks in the Go North 9er Challenge will receive a certificate and custom patch to let everyone know they conquered the famed peaks.

Even if the Go North 9er Challenge is not for you, there are still endless trails and opportunities for families to get out and explore. Come visit us and reconnect with the peace and tranquility of nature. Whatever you’re in the mood for, the Great North Woods promises to have it.

Take a peaceful walk on the Cohos Trail and make sure to keep your eyes open for local wildlife while visiting. The wildlife viewing in the North Country is just as good as the hiking. And if you are looking for great hikes for the kids, we have that too. Check out the top five kids’ hikes here. The Silvio Conte-Nulhegan Wildlife Refuge is one of the most peaceful areas full of solitude in the Great North Woods. From birds to deer, we have it all. However, the most famous resident in our woods is the grand moose. The best time of day to see a moose is at night when they are most active, but you can see them at dusk, dawn or throughout the day too. Just be careful to give them their space if you do encounter one of these magnificent creatures.

To truly embrace the outdoors, spend a night or two camping. Finish a long day of hiking, fishing or off-roading under the stars. No matter how you prefer to “rough it,” – in a tent, RV or lodge – getting out into the amazing landscape can provide your family with that quintessential Go North experience.

Tight-lines for the win:

If you are in the mood for something a little slower-paced and relaxing, grab a fly rod and head out to one of the region’s many great lakes or rivers to land that monster salmon or trout.

We offer some of the best fishing in the eastern United States with great solitude. Among the top places to wet your line are the Androscoggin River in Errol and the headwaters of the Connecticut River, which is home to the “Trophy Stretch.” You’re sure to catch that picture-perfect fish on this famed stretch of the river which is full of rainbow trout, brook trout and salmon.

Salmon fishing can be especially productive in the North Country. The conditions are just right for these regal fish that are very active. For bigger fish, head to one of the lakes in the region.

The Connecticut Lakes offer excellent fishing from shore, in waders or on a boat. Hire a local guide to get the most out of a day. Even if you have years of experience landing fish under your belt, our guides can give tips and tricks on how best to drift fish and wade fish the region to increase your odds of going home with a classic fishing tale and an experience like no other.

ATVing in New Hampshire:

If you want to explore the Great North Woods a little faster, trade-in your two-feet for four-wheels with an ATV. One of New Hampshire’s favorite pastimes is ATVing. Our chamber of commerce and several local clubs have been working hard over the past few years to improve the riding experience throughout the Ride the Wilds trail system.

New trail signs have been installed and promise to make the entire experience enjoyable from start to finish.

With more than 1,000 miles of interconnected ATV trails, you can explore the woods until your heart is content. The Ride the Wilds trail system is arguably the best place to ride in northern New Hampshire with a range of trails from beginner to expert.

Trails have opened! Please be sure to check for temporary trail closures during the season to assure your safety. ATV season in the Great North Woods runs through Columbus Day, Oct. 12, providing plenty of time to kick up the dust.

New Hampshire festivals:

Our hope is that we can return to life as normal here in the North Country sooner than later. With that in mind, the following events may get delayed or canceled due to current events with COVID-19. Please check back frequently for the latest updates on all events.
