Weather

The North Country is home to four distinct seasons that each offer visitors unique and exciting experiences regardless of the weather!

seasons

Cold, snowy winters arrive early in the North Country. Pittsburg averages a mind-boggling 175 inches of snow per year (the annual U.S. average is 26 inches), creating ideal conditions for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and other winter sports. Winter often hangs on well into spring, until warmer weather arrives and ushers in the spring fishing season. The region has sunny, pleasant summers with temperatures that are often cooler than much of the rest of New England, providing welcome relief from the heat. Autumns are cool and colorful, with some of the best fall foliage in the Northeast.

Thanks to these changing seasons, you can experience new adventures in the North Country all year long.

Winter activities in the North Country last longer as winter starts early and and can last into early May! It’s the perfect playground for those that love winter sports. The Great North Woods is known for having the best snowmobiling and is considered the snowmobile capital of New England. Snowfall typically makes its debut in our region around October and lingers well into April (sometimes May).

Spring in the North Country brings bluebird skies and an opportunity to enjoy winter activities longer than many other regions. We welcome the change of season a little later than most, setting a perfect stomping ground for those that love the snow. Ride your sled well into April and maybe even May, where elevations maintain several feet of snow and the valleys start to welcome the signs of spring. Maintain tradition with a visit to a sugar house when sap is running. What a beautiful contrast to experience.

Summer in the North Country is warm and pleasant and lasts from Memorial Day weekend (which can still be a bit chilly) to mid-September. This is a wonderful time of year to get outdoors and experience all the recreational opportunities and breath-taking scenery the landscapes provide. The event calendars fill up with tons of fun for the entire family to enjoy.

Fall in the North Country brings crisp days packed brilliant display of color, changing the landscape to a kaleidoscope of red, orange and yellow. People travel here from around the world to experience the spectacular foliage. Go North to be First in The Nation to absorb Mother Nature’s extravagant display of color with no traffic to deter the viewing. Fall in the Great North Woods means spectacular views without the crowds. You can experience the changing colors in peace and quiet. Mid-September to the end of October, is referred to as Peak “leaf peeping”. Some of our favorite spots for leaf-peeping can be found here.
